LASIK and Eye Allergies
LASIK for Eye Allergies – El Paso, TX
LASIK eye surgery is one of the most sought after vision correction treatments. LASIK reshapes the cornea to permanently correct the imperfections that lead to common refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Because of its many benefits, most patients are eager to find out if LASIK is right for them. One question that is commonly asked of our doctors at El Paso Eye Surgeons is whether LASIK can be performed on patients with eye allergies. Not only is LASIK safe for patients with eye allergies, but getting rid of contact lenses that trap in eye irritants may even improve eye allergy symptoms. What Causes Seasonal Allergies?
Most people are happy when winter is over and spring arrives with the growth of grass and flowers. However, for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, spring comes with the onset of itchy, watery eyes and general eye irritation, among other symptoms. Unfortunately, all those beautiful new blooms also bring out pollen, one of the biggest causes of seasonal allergies.
Pollen in the air can cause a number of uncomfortable allergy symptoms, including congestion, a runny nose, sneezing, and, of course, a burning or itchy sensation in the eyes. If pollen gets in the eyes, these symptoms are likely to be even worse. If you wear contact lenses, symptoms can become even more severe. Contact lenses can cause pollen to get trapped in the eyes and can make it difficult to flush pollen away with water.
LASIK and Eye Allergies
LASIK is by no means a treatment for eye allergies. However, LASIK does dramatically improve a patient’s vision. So dramatically, in fact, that most are able to completely eliminate the use of glasses or contact lenses. LASIK can benefit eye allergy sufferers because it provides patients with crisp, clear vision without the use of potentially troublesome contact lenses. Without these lenses, patients don’t have to worry about pollen getting trapped in the eyes, and symptoms can be managed more easily.
In order to determine if a patient is an ideal candidate for LASIK surgery, an eye exam will need to be performed. It is important to verify that allergies are responsible for symptoms such as itchy, burning, watery eyes, and to rule out any other eye infections or diseases. If the eyes are in good health and if the patient has an eye prescription that has remained steady for at least a year, it is likely that they can benefit from LASIK treatment.
Patients that undergo LASIK should keep in mind that they must avoid touching or rubbing the eyes during the recovery phase. For this reason, it may be a good idea to undergo LASIK during a season in which eye allergies are less likely to occur.
